Proverbs 6:-16-19

"These six [things] doth the LORD hate: yea, seven [are] an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness [that] speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren."

Proverbs 7:1-4

"My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," And call understanding your nearest kin."

  1. Isn't it interesting that in the seven abominations to God, lying is listed TWICE. There may be technical differences, but both still come down to telling lies.

I think a whole bunch could be said about lying in our culture. Lying has become rather commonplace, don't you think? Lying in advertising, in politics, in our everyday dealings with authority figures. In fact, many times I'll assume I'm being lied to unless I see proof to the contrary. It's a pretty sad.

That's why it's so important to God that we avoid lying. We loose credibility when caught in a lie, and in this day and age (perhaps more then in any other) we need people to be able to trust us to tell the truth.

Thanks for sharing this scripture, Gwen! It made me think.

  2. April you are right. Lying has become acceptable in our culture. I think this is the reason that correction is considered rude these days. Why would we be so offended by correction, except that correction catches us in lies. Just a thought.
