The Dopamine of Joking

Now that I have posted a couple of amusing videos of comedians whose expertise is in clean stories that makes us laugh, I have noticed something very interesting.

Yep, you guessed it, I have been noticing lots of videos arising featuring "Christian comedians." Is this the new normal for Christian entertainment? Has joke cracking become the latest fad racing through the modern church.

Some of these stories are hilarious making us feel happy while we are watching them. However, something I discovered about them is that they tell stories about life but have little to do with Christ or with spirituality of any kind.

Is it possible that the devil was not able to distract born again believers with false doctrine so he is going to regale us with funny stories that make us want to have only happy thoughts.

There are so many things in our culture today that could easily distract us from truth. The pulpits are so full of story tellers and slap happy clappers whose greatest aspirations are to become the most sought after friendly preachers for their ability to bring a crowd into a jag of hilarity.

I admit these comedians are fun to watch and some of their stories are funny, but if we have a steady diet of them continually it is possible the dopamine in our brain will never allow us to return to serious thinking.

The video games and television are a problem this way too, they create the happy fluid in our brain that keep us addicted to the continual feelings of euphoria that feels like withdrawal when we can no longer have these fixes of entertainment.

The word "amuse" means literally "not to think", yep, this is just where the devil wants us to remain, addicted to entertainment that impairs our ability to think clearly. When we are being "amused" by others we lose our ability to think critically with our own mind. We can easily be controlled by the ideas and lack of convictions of others.

If we are deeply addicted to stories and joking there is an anger that arises when someone comes along and attempts to help us think more seriously. Just a little to think about.

1 Peter 5:8 "8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
