The Sports Crazed Idol

There will be lots of men and women acting like children tomorrow, feeding their narcissistic need to be elevated by proxy through a winning team. I will probably get blasted for this one, but I really see no purpose in grown men being paid huge bucks to pretend they care about the city that hired them, while they were born and raised somewhere else.

It makes more sense to me that a ball player would be born and raised in the area they represent on a ball team. But then again, we have to remember too, that this is merely entertainment crazed America that takes it's amusement to ultimate extremes.

When we are in family gatherings and nothing else is discussed except the ball games, we can sense how important they are to those present. No one is speaking about anything that matters for eternity, and irritation is expressed when there is a suggestion to move into a new area of dialogue.

The one who suggested that we talk about something else is treated as though they had committed some sort of infraction worthy of banishment, we can be sure we are dealing with idol worshipers.

Many of us have television shows we watch from time to time, we know they are not important, we use them to fill time when we are too tired to do anything else or when we have finished our work and want to relax.

However if any of us were to talk incessantly about the shows we watch, those listening would become bored and even aggravated at our endless verbiage. Carrying on relentlessly about every detail of the show we watched would annoy us bitterly, sort of like nails crossing a blackboard. There, now we have a picture of what this sports insanity feels like to those of us who are not interested.

As long as we are in America, we will have entertainment, it behoves us to evaluate what we are watching, how often we watch and whether or not we have turned the entertainment into an idol, through an obsession with it. If we find ourselves speaking more about our entertainment than we do God or the needs of others, then we can be sure we have idolatry in our hearts.

Even clean entertainment, seems almost like an oxymoronic idea, can be an idol if we enjoy more of it than we do working, praying and reading our Bibles.

Notice how much the secular media loves this stuff, that should give us a very big clue.

Just some things on which to cogitate in the coming hours, given the next immense event on the agenda in the media.

Repentance Is Necessary

God will only restore those who pierced Him if they repent. The very sad thing in our cultural psychological teachings now is that we should be forgiven even when we are not sorry, that is patently unBiblical.

This thinking has caused believer and non-believer to think that they should be forgiven no matter what their attitude or actions. They no longer are broken over sin, but demand forgiveness.

Forgiveness is conditional....the condition is repentance, meaning a change of mind, from a heart that doesn't want Christ while justifying sin, to a heart that wants Christ and hates sin.

Our desire must be to please God, He will not change a heart that doesn't want to be changed. God never forces His grace on anyone.

Psalm 51:1-19 "51 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness;

According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity
And cleanse me from my sin.
3 For know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.
4 Against You, You only, I have sinned
And done what is evil in Your sight,
So that You are justified when You speak
And blameless when You judge.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.
6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness,
Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.
9 Hide Your face from my sins
And blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation
And sustain me with a willing spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners will be converted to You.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation;
Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
That my mouth may declare Your praise.
16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;
You are not pleased with burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
18 By Your favor do good to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices,
In burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar."
