Spanking can be akin to a child getting burned once from a stove and learning not to place his hand near the burner. It teaches that bad behavior will bring punishment, but does not reach the soul of the child as does isolation.
Isolation can do far more damage in a child than a couple of swats to stop a behavior. The spanking deals with behavior, but isolation affects the emotional stability of the child, causing him to feel unwanted and unloved, somewhat like those cliques at school or church where people are left out if they don't measure up to the social standards of the crowd.
