When we look at the account of the devil's conversation with Eve in the garden we can see just how deceptive and enticing he can be.
Do not think for one moment that the devil is working differently now from when he was in the garden.
Do not think that the devil is no longer working at all! He is busier than ever these days because he knows his time is short.
1 Peter 5:8 "Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
Satan used flattery and deception to entice Eve into sin and rebellion against the very God Who created her.
Eve added to God's Words when she said in verse 3, claiming that God said she could not even touch the fruit. God never said that, but because she was not paying attention she added her own thoughts.
Then to top it all off Eve viewed her own perception of the way the fruit looked over God's own words. She trusted her own eyes and instincts over God's wisdom.
Hmmm, sound familiar?!
Often in our culture Christians overlook God's commands to place their trust in what they think they see with their own eyes or what they experience. We tend to see things we want to see and claim things on happy experiences. A sort of modern "situational ethics." If it looks and feels good it must be good. Sadly often the fruit looks good on the outside but is full of worms.
When God said that we must trust in His Word over our experiences we still have those who will interpret the Bible based on their experiences or the experiences of the friends.
Next time someone says to you, "but look what just happened it must be true", a good answer might be, "stop right there, what did God say?, That's all we need to know."
Genesis 3:1-24
"1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.
5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
