It is not true that hurting people hurt people, at least many people do not choose to do to others what has been done to them. Because we have been hurt is no excuse to be evil toward others. I have seen people who were treated very well who became mean, what would their excuse be?
Mean people hurt others. Many of us were hurt much in our lives but because of it, we chose not to hurt others, we know how it feels.

Those who choose angry responses are those who have anger in their character.
Those who have empathy in their heart, a good character, choose not to do to others what has been done to them. Its a choice to be mean or to be kind.
Some people become narcissistic because they followed the example of their narcissistic families or culture. They have a choice to be different or to follow along with the crowd to be accepted or not.
Those with strong character break away from narcissistic family structures to be able to live for Christ. It takes the character qualities of Christ to resist the cliquiness of families and cultures. Only the strong will sense the road of the narcissist is a dead-end road leading to hell. There is nothing good down that road, in this life or the next.
The narcissist is in a constant state of turmoil, their heart is hard, there is missing empathy. If you want to live for Christ you must obey God and remove yourself from those who act narcissistically (completely selfish and mean spirited). If you are around them regularly you will become like them. We tend to ape that which we see all the time, it becomes familiar and comfortable.
When we do not act like the narcissist we are basically swimming upstream from the family or culture. Remaining only brings heartache when we refuse to be like them. They will continue to batter us and any of our dear friends if they meet them to control those who rise above the low standard of the narcissist.
Luke 6:31
"31 Treat others the same way you want them to treat you."
1 Corinthians 15:33-34 "33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.” 34 Sober up as you ought, and stop sinning; for some of you are ignorant of God. I say this to your shame.…"
If you want to please God walking with Him daily, you must make a choice to surround yourself with those who love Him as much as you do.
Proverbs 13:19-21 "…19 Desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but turning from evil is detestable to fools. 20 He who walks with the wise will become wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed. 21 Disaster pursues sinners, but prosperity is the reward of the righteous."
The prosperity of the believer does not always have to do with money, often it is pertaining to the soul and the Spirit. The greatest prosperity we can possess is wisdom that comes from lessons learned and Holy Spirit guidance.
The prosperity preachers attempt to focus their followers on personal financial gain, distracting them from the wealth of wisdom from walking with Christ. Wisdom from the Holy Spirit is valued far above anything else, even those who are poor in possessions and finances can have this wealth.
Proverbs 4
A Father’s Instruction
4 Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father,
And give attention that you may gain understanding,
2 For I give you sound teaching;
Do not abandon my instruction.
3 When I was a son to my father,
Tender and the only son in the sight of my mother,
4 Then he taught me and said to me,
“Let your heart hold fast my words;
Keep my commandments and live;
5 Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding!
Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
6 “Do not forsake her, and she will guard you;
Love her, and she will watch over you.
7 “The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom;
And with all your acquiring, get understanding.
8 “Prize her, and she will exalt you;
She will honor you if you embrace her.
9 “She will place on your head a garland of grace;
She will present you with a crown of beauty.”
