James 1:7-10 "7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away."
However, maybe they believe those prosperity preachers who say you just have to believe something hard enough for it to come to pass. This makes the "thinkers" and "hopes" gods unto themselves.
This is so foolish it's hard to even address it without being cynical.
Cynical meaning: "believing that people are motivated by self-interest; distrustful of human sincerity or integrity."
Perhaps the "name it and claim it crowd" are all about their own glory and avarice. Some people have used the phrase; "the blab it and grab it" group. They believe all their words magically turn into whatever they speak.
This thinking appeals to a fallen world that loves to think well of themselves, the very people who could never repent, after all, a god can do no wrong.
This is the very sin of the devil in heaven when he wanted to be above God. He enticed Eve in the garden to think of herself as a god who could have whatever she wanted. Because of the devil, Eve placed herself above God by not obeying Him.
When children refuse to obey their parents they are placing themselves above their parents, just as people have been placing themselves above God for many centuries as they ignore Him to do whatever they want.
To believe whatever you want without consulting God will lead to great pain and misery.
To trust in ones own thoughts and words is to have an idol against God.
