We know there are many goats in the body of Christ right now, perhaps more goats than sheep. This is why so many believers who love the Lord are leaving these man-made institutions in favor of authentic worship at home with others like them who are searching for fellowship with those who love Christ more than the culture and more than their own families.
Luke 14:26-30
26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple."
It has been my experience in watching people that most believers will avoid the subject of Jesus Christ to remain accepted by family and friends.
Remember that the apostles and Christ were rejected by most people as they traveled to share the gospel. Even just being identified with Christ was enough for family and friends to avoid them.
2 Timothy 4:16-17 " 16 At my first defense, no one stood with me, but everyone deserted me. May it not be charged against them. 17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles would hear it. So I was delivered from the mouth of the lion.…"
Matthew 10:21-23 "…21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death. 22 You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. "
God never told believers to remain indefinitely with family or friends who rejected Christ and who rejected them. He told Paul to move on as he would be led by the Holy Spirit to those who would listen and to those who were his brothers and sisters in Christ.
My encouragement to believers is to keep seeking Christ even if you have to do it all by yourselves. There is no greater joy than knowing we are doing what Christ told us to do whether or not anyone goes with us.
In these last days there will be little fellowship and often no one who will walk beside us as we walk with Christ.
The biggest challenge I see in the United States of America is the wrong belief that "conservatism" is equal to "Christianity." Nothing could be farthest from the truth. And, yes, most Christians would tell you they know this but will speak more of the politics than they do of Christ, which is the evidence of what I am saying. I hear more believers speaking of politics and its evils, as well as the desire to save our country than they share the gospel with those who are parishing.
Being conservative does not equate to a life with Christ. And yet, so many people are calling Christians to political activism. They are declaring certain politicians as "Christian" merely for saying things like "I am praying for you" or "God bless America." What I do not hear from any of them is a call to repent and trust in Christ.
They use mild words about "God" so that they are palatable to all religions. They speak non-stop about the economy, the borders, the military might but nothing about the need to turn to Christ and obey Him.
In fact our Christian culture is much more invested in their personal rights and safety than they are in presenting the gospel that souls might be saved.
We are not a Christian nation nor have we ever been. The government of this country fashioned itself after the "freedom for all religions" without a strong emphasis on Christ. I hear people who have never been born again using the words "God" to help them cope with their trials but they never speak the name of Jesus Christ.
Most Christians today are invested deeply in preserving their freedoms, their financial well being and their acceptance of family no matter how disobedient to the Word of God those family members may be.
An elderly woman once told me that "religion is a private matter" and that we should not tell others what they should be doing. This was someone who attended church gatherings most of her life and was accepting of many things her "Christian" family members were doing that defied God's principles in His Word.
This woman was angry and disrespectful of those who would correct someone who claimed to be a Christian who was violating God's Word. She had a "form of religion" but denied much of God's Word while ignorant of most of what Christ taught. She even told me once that it was alright to worship angels. As I explained to her that God forbid the worship of angels and that the verse she quoted said; "the false worship of angels", she heard it but had no response. The unresponsiveness was the evidenced that she heard the truth and chose not to believe it.
When I became born again I wanted more than anything to find out how God thought and what He loved and hated. I searched the Bible continually especially when a question arose about the modern church believed. I was always asking questions like; "why do we do that" or "what does that mean"? It was amazing how many things people believed and practiced when they didn't even know why.
This woman I previously spoke of was disdainful of me when I asked these questions and even unable to give me an answer to those questions. The anger seemed to emerge when she couldn't answer and there were many such questions.
When I began to realize that much of what I was taught for many years was merely tradition of men and had not basis in Scripture I was beginning to be set free from the bondage of human traditions. This matter of being set free from human traditions angered those around me who wanted me to fall in line with their thinking.
It is frightening to many people for their belief system to be challenged when the only reason they follow them is because its was what they were taught and what they have always done. Their comfort level was based on those traditions and not on Christ.
Mark 7:13 "13 Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters.”
Colossians 2:8
"See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ."
When someone becomes angry and rejects you because you challenge their desired belief system you have encountered someone who doesn't understand what they believe or where it came from, they merely do what everyone else tells them to do to maintain their acceptance from the pack.
Mark 7:6-9
"And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!"
Many church attendees are just like those God rebuked in the Bible. They say they are Christians but do not obey God's Word except in some things they like while ignoring the things they don't like.
This culture is steeped in psychology which was born out of Darwinism, an atheist who set out to prove there was no God. He rejected the truths of the Bible and favored and taught the opposite of what God proclaimed in His Word.
The beliefs in our culture on many things are based on this system of Darwinism rather than the Bible and sadly has entered the modern church system.
My challenge to everyone who names the name of Christ is to ask the Holy Spirit for truth and then read His Word to obey what is written there. In doing this you will not ignore or skip over certain words to use the other words out of context, but will read all the words to discern the meaning.
When we are determined to read the Word of God with the help of the Holy Spirit our eyes will be opened to all the things that are wrong in the church today and will likely become the enemy of all family members who attend these gatherings.
They will gossip against you even feeling justified in excluding you as well as misinterpreting your character and your beliefs. They are threatened by your resolve to follow Christ in a very real way, beyond just words, dedicated to knowing His heart and obeying what we know.
What most people will not do is ask you why you believe the Bible or to explain why you say what you do. They do not want to hear anything different from what they have already been trained to believe. Becoming estranged from us when we assert the Bible truths with other "Christians" is common and will bring about isolation from them. They will reject us, gossip about us and even accuse us of things that were never true about us.
Remember this:
1 Peter 3:16
"Having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame."
Matthew 15:9 "In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,"
And, never forget this:
Isaiah 54:17
"No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”
