Many people are confused about the salvatoin message. They think because we choose to trust in Christ that we can lose the salvation He gave us.
The Holy Spirit never leaves the one who is sealed by Him. Those who do not remain in the faith are never born again. Someone can be exposed to the Holy Spirit without being born again. This is why God told us that those who do not remain were never born again, they only thought they were.
Matthew 7:21-23 "21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’"
If we could walk away that would make us more powerful than Christ Who sealed us with His Spirit as a guarantee of our inheritance.
God is the One Who saves us, seals us and keeps us until He comes for us. It is all His Work and none of our work. The only thing we do is believe Him and He does all the rest. We have no power to undo what God did when He made us a new creation. When He did that the old is gone and the new sustains us.
2 Corinthians 5:17
"17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new [a]creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come."
Ephesians 1:13-14
"13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of the promise, 14 who is a first installment of our inheritance, in regard to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory."
We cannot save ourselves by our works and we cannot keep ourselves by our works.
Ephesians 2:9-11 "…9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life. 11 Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles in the flesh and called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision (that done in the body by human hands)"
No one can get the Holy Spirit by works and no one can lose it by works. The Holy Spirit does not jump in and out of people based on sin. If someone who is born again sins then God said this about that;
Hebrews 12:5-7 "…5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not take lightly the discipline of the Lord, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises every son He receives.” 7 Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?…"
God never throws away His children, when He changes them they never return to the old self again. What God does cannot be undone by man.
