After I grew up and found out the truth about Billy Graham, I told my mother, who was a fan and often watched his televised crusades on tv, she refused to believe me. Many believers were just like this, they loved someone and would choose not to use the Word to determine whether or not they were preaching truth.
When we hold a man up as the authority or as an idol, we will miss Christ. So oftenfamous people do and say unBiblical things, but those who love them will not evaluate everything as they should.
If the iconic man said it, then it must be true, is their mindset. We must keep our eyes on Christ, everyone else must be evaluated.
Acts 17:11 "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so."
Even Paul, the very person God used to write the Scriptures down, was questioned by the Bereans, to be sure he was telling the truth. God called them "noble minded."
