We are to be good to our animals; "10 A righteous man regards the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are only cruelty." Proverbs 12:10
However: Human beings are far more valuable than animals. If we were to focus more on animals than we do on human beings, then our focus is off and we do not have God's perspective.
Matthew 6:26 "26 Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns— and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"

God gave us animals for food.
Genesis 9:3
"Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything."
Leviticus 11:2
“Speak to the people of Israel, saying, These are the living things that you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth."
Genesis 1:26
"Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
In the final analysis humans are higher than animals in intellect, in abilities and in the mind of God. This does not mean its alright to abuse them. Just because something is beneath us is no excuse for abuse. Any abuse against any living thing is an abusive heart, the character and heart of a man is revealed in his actions toward living things.
However we are over the animals they are subject to our training and use. God told us we must kill them to live, whether to eat them or protect our families and livestock. Whether we eat them or use them to plow our fields, they are for our use. In the midst of all this we treat them as humanly as possible, it will show our character and our respect for God's creation.
The more we read the Word of God the more we understand our purpose here and His ways!
