Confession of sin is a great help in developing humility. While hard at first it gets easier the more we do it.
There is such cleansing that comes from confession that we do it more quickly when we find ourselves acting or speaking in fleshly ways that displease God, the feeling of relief rolls over us like a gentle peace.
Sadly though, those who do not confess become hardened to truth, perhaps so resistant that they are further hardening their hearts as Pharoah did in the days of Moses. Any peace leaves them and their whole being is in bondage to their guilt whether they admit it or not.
One never knows when God will harden your heart to the point of no return when the resistance to truth is continual.
God said in His word that Pharoah hardened his own heart and the next step was that God gave him what he wanted and hardened his heart permanently.
Do not be like Pharoah resisting God to the point of no return. Exodus
