Our actions come from our mindset. Mindset first, actions follow.
Repentance is a change of mind toward God and our sinfulness. When we do this God then changes us into a new creation. We do not change ourselves that is an exercise in futility. A fallen desperately wicked person cannot change who they are, only God can do that.
2 Corinthians 5:16-18 "…16 So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh. Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:…"
Ephesians 2:10 "10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
When Christ changes us and lives in us we can no longer go back to what we were. Our entire WAY of thinking has been done away with and replaced with the mind of Christ.
When we become born again the old us is gone, the new remains for eternity.
