Were You Born Again or Just Joined a Club?

I have been wondering recently how many people in these last days, have "decided" to become Christian, because it appeals to their pride to be better than others, but these same people have never confessed their sinfulness or trusted Christ.

I think in our day there may be many more than we realize.

Matthew 7:21-23...
"21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’"

This is why I don't assume someone is a born again believer simply because they tell me, I don't even assume it because of good works that they do. I seem to be able to tell often by how quickly the Spirit within me connects with the Spirit within them. Often I sense something ugly and foreboding in some people, making me question whether or not they were ever born again.

The answer to this is that there are many who decided to join a Christian group but never confessed they were sinners, so Christ never changed them into a new creation. They joined a club like we would join a bowling league, when we get tired of it, we quit the club and move on to something else.
2 Corinthians 13:5 "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you-- unless indeed you fail the test?"
