A good rule of thumb in communicating with others, with integrity and in honesty, is one I heard a counselor of assertiveness training use;
"Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don't say it mean."

The only way we can pull this off is to be continually in communication with Christ who lives in us. It is not natural to communicate calmly and with integrity all the time, it takes the working of the Holy Spirit in our life to compel us to be more Christlike. As we progress we will become more like Him, but only if we want to, asking Him to make us the way we should be.
1 John 2:6 "Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked."
