"Everyone did what was right in their own eyes" and no one would listen. Today's culture is "as in the days of Noah", it is hell bent on doing whatever it wants without any guidance and restraint. If someone doesn't believe me, test it, simply disagree with someone, telling them they are wrong about something and watch what comes out.
Their response will show their inner heart. It will be rare that anyone says, "I'll go pray about that." The response almost all of the time is anger that they were corrected.
Narcissists are full of advice for others but are enraged at the suggestion that they might have to rethink their own actions or ideas.
I have actually met a few people in my life who enjoy listening to differing views of others. Because they are reasonable and emotionally secure people, they feel no sense of having been attacked when there is a disagreement.
We live in a narcissistic culture of self love, these people are deeply aggravated when they are instructed, corrected, rejecting all disagreement without thinking about it. They are gods in their own eyes.
When someone has such an elevated opinion of themselves there is no place for God to move in their lives, they remain spiritual babies for lack of growth because of their refusal to receive instruction or correction.
Correction, instruction and disagreement are necessary for anyone to grow. When the goal of someone is merely to appear superior, then there is no chance for growth. Anything that might make this superior person realize their need for change or reflection, will be rejected, they remain spiritual and emotional babies.
Until we can see the value of the thoughts of others, we cannot grow. No one has ALL the wisdom or knowledge necessary to grow. Our perspectives are often tainted with our desires rather than truth.
Those who grow and increase in knowledge and holiness are those who listen, question and pray about all that they hear. They never simply reject something simply because it might make them see a need for change. Those who love Christ, love spiritual growth and change, they welcome it.
Understanding God's heart is far superior to elevating self, to those who are seeking Christ with all their heart.
2 Timothy 3:2 (CJB) "People will be self-loving, money-loving, proud, arrogant, insulting, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,"
It is impossible to reason with those who have this elevated view of their own importance. They will not receive instruction, nor will they self reflect. They must maintain a superior position in their own eyes. We know intimately about this because of the way the entire culture has gone in the past 40 years.
The people have been infused and indoctrinated with "self love" through the self esteem teaching to such a degree that even those who say they don't believe in it are full of this very same self love.
2 Timothy 3:2-5 "2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these."
