I have been in discussions with what I will call "West Coast narcissists", about normal protocol for actions with others, in which the narcissists proclaimed loudly that they would never wear a tie to the white house in front of the president of the United States.
I told them that they would not be allowed into the white house to go in front of the president without proper attire. Their response was astounding, they said, "I don't wear a tie for anyone."
The Bible speaks about proper clothing for certain functions and in front of the king.
It's not about the clothing in these instances, it is about respect for the expectations of those who are in power or above us in rank. We don't even have to like the king, but we should still show respect.
When narcissists see themselves above everyone else they will never defer to others in anything. And, they will always see themselves as superior even to the king. I am convinced that someone who operates from this standpoint of self-exaltation is not submitted to Christ. How can someone disrespect God's order in life and still respect Him. We know they do not respect Christ because they misuse His Word to justify their sin.
Giving preference to others is showing respect. Those who cannot show difference to others will never grow in holiness. Confident people are kind people they yield to one another regardless of their own desires. Demonstrating Christ's love is far more important to believers who have the fruit of the Spirit, than being superior to others.
Galatians 5:22-23
"22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
In fact, those who love Christ first and then others second have no thought or need to be superior to others, they love and there is no room for superiority in relationships where there is love.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. "
Regard for others is huge in the hearts of those who love Christ. Those who regard themselves first as a lifestyle are not obeying Christ and may not even be born-again.
1 Corinthians 16:14
"Let all that you do be done in love."
Where there is Christ-like love there is harmony.
Colossians 3:14
"And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony."
