Many years ago, before coffins and embalming, people were buried in the ground and decomposed over a period of time. They decayed naturally; no trace of them was left.
God said we came from dust and would return to dust. Think about it: people tried to stop this decaying process by embalming; ask yourself why. It was almost in defiance of what God said would happen. Was this pagan ritual of embalming to preserve a body for the afterlife another pagan tradition accepted by Christianity?
Think for a moment about the practice of purchasing a very expensive piece of furniture called a coffin lined with pillows for the body that is placed inside. Does this not seem like one is making the person comfortable as though they are alive?
Once we have adopted, through many generations of human tradition, it is impossible to change the thinking of people to embrace truth. Neither burrying or cremation is wrong according to God. Perhaps though the use of pagan rituals to preserve what God said would decay is the problem.
And, if you will use Christ as an example, you might say He was treated with spices and placed in a burial. Let me remind you that He was anointed on the outside; no embalming fluids entered His body, and He was not placed in the ground in a box; He was placed in a tomb above ground.
One more thing Christianity adopted as normal and acceptable that has no real Biblical basis. I know that God looks at the heart and I cannot judge anyone's choice of burial; however, perhaps we place many burdens on ourselves by obeying man's rituals that God never intended. Just something to think about.
