We shall know them by their fruit!

Galatians 5:22-23
"22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

They are not works, they are character qualities. Even non-believers can have good works but they will lack the character qualities given by Christ.

Religion is not Salvation

Practicing "religion" is not a relationships with Christ.

It Must Be Christ Doing it in Hearts

Don't think that trying real hard to be good is a good thing.

It is important to remember that it is seeking God to change us that allows us to change and grow. Attempting to achieve goodness in our own flesh will not last, is empty and fruitless.

Self effort is nothing more than self worship, thinking one can make themselves good or better by their own effort will collapse in on them when they become too old and tired to keep up the pretense.

We must desire for Christ to change us into His image. The dependence on Christ for change ought to be the first and only method of changing ourselves. It is His work in us, not self effort.

Ephesians 2:10
"10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

When we have sinned, failing to be what we should, our first response ought to be to confess that sin, asking the Lord to work in us what we should be. Without confession there can be no change.

If someone has so much pride that they cannot speak openly their sins or failures, they will never grow in holiness or maturity. We see many people who seem immature even into old age, as though they never learned a thing from life. Very likely this happens because they have neglected to confess their faults over their lifetime, leaning into their emotional responses of defensiveness all their life, left them spiritual and emotional toddlers. Their bodies may be 70, but their mentality is that of a toddler.

Ephesians 4:13-15 "…13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head.…"

Emotional toddlers often accuse others of being mean for correcting, even calling them unloving because they don't like the message, when the toddler is the one who acts in covertly unkind and manipulative ways.

Have you ever heard a toddler say to their mother, "I don't love you", to cause hurt feelings to get their mother to give them what they want? This is the tactic of the narcissist, using the silent treatment, calling others hateful and demonstrating haughtiness, the narcissist will attempt to guilt their target into submission. They are not capable of self reflection to resolve a matter, admitting their part in the conflict. They must beat down anyone who pokes holes in their elevated view of themselves.

If we are to avoid the becoming a narcissist we must be able and willing to confess our faults and shortcomings. Narcissists defend vehement everything they do to avoid having to face their real selves.

Pretense is the practice of the narcissist, they fear being exposed which is why they become so angry when anyone with ill intent is exposed. Exposure frightens them because they know the anger and jealousy that lives deeply in their soul and they must hide it.

Proverbs 28:13
"He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion."

Therein lies the answer to the problem of sin, confession and appealing to God to change our heart. Changing actions without a heart change is not pleasing to God. He wants our heart to change, the change of heart will cause a change in actions and attitudes.

2 Corinthians 5:17
"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come."

Ezekiel 36:26
"Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."

Psalm 51:10
"Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me."

If someone is still angry and raging, refusing to discuss matters with the other person in mind for resolution of the problem, then they are not confessing their sin of anger, their sin of pride and their sin of withholding of love.

The most unloving, prideful and mean spirited people are those who accuse others of what they are, but the others are not. It is the favored tactic of the devil.

The Last Days Mentality

It might be a good idea to memorize the following verses, ready to answer those who accuse a believer of being too harsh or speaking without love.

Definition of Love in our day translates into making others "feel good", when in most cases straight talk and boldness is necessary.

It is interesting that those who hate a correction or rebuke say we are not loving but have no problem acting in mean ways toward us because they don't like what we say. There is hypocrisy often in the hearts of those who demand soft words and flattering lies to keep them happy.

Jeremiah 5:21
'Now hear this, O foolish and senseless people, Who have eyes but do not see; Who have ears but do not hear.

Jeremiah 7:26
"Yet they did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck; they did more evil than their fathers."

Jeremiah 20:8
"For each time I speak, I cry aloud; I proclaim violence and destruction, Because for me the word of the LORD has resulted In reproach and derision all day long."

Welcome to our world in the present, looking much like the days of Noah and the days of Lot, we are faced with few allies and many enemies as we seek to follow Christ and speak His truth.

They Jailed the Prophet

It isn't possible to learn from our sins without consequences. The consequences bring sorrow over sin and a change in attitude and then behavior. Our culture withholds consequences far too often, empowering the sinner to not only continue in sin but to grow worse. There is always room for mercy, however, in our day mercy is extended far too quickly and freely before the sinner has expressed remorse.

We are not to extend mercy to the unrepentant. Mercy is for those who have a genuine demonstration of sorrow over their sin. Mercy does not bring a hardened soul to repentance.

Isaiah 26:10 " 10 Though the wicked is shown favor, He does not learn righteousness; He deals unjustly in the land of uprightness, And does not perceive the majesty of the LORD."

Hebrews 12:7-9 "…7 Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you do not experience discipline like everyone else, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9 Furthermore, we have all had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not much more submit to the Father of our spirits and live?…"

Hebrews 12:11-12 "11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a peaceful harvest of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore strengthen your limp hands and weak knees.…"

It is common these days for the truth teller to be punished for exposing the sin, while the sinner is coddled and pampered for having been disciplined. Our churches are full of "snow flakes" who refuse to be corrected because of this mentality of coddling to spare the feelings of the one who causes trouble.

I have heard many stories of those who have attempted to correct the divisive person who works against the Word of God, being surrounded by loving arms of parishioners while the prophet who calls them out is punished, excluded and even driven out of the church for their honesty. The preservation of the organization takes priority over the truth, correction and a return to Biblical standards.

1 Corinthians 2:13 ". 13 And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. "

Zechariah 8:16
"'These are the things which you should do: speak the truth to one another; judge with truth and judgment for peace in your gates."

Ephesians 4:25
"Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another."

2 Corinthians 2:17
"For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God."

Those who speak truth with boldness will often be assigned the role of the scapegoat to be shunned and ignored. Do not be surprised when this happens. Do what the Lord tells you to do and move on when others won't listen or dialogue.

Galatians 4:16
"So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?"

Proverbs 23:9 "9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words. "

Narcissism is Rampant Among Pastors

These same dynamics are present in narcissistic families, the devil is working on every front in the area of divisiveness. Often the leaders of churches and families when they are abusive are protected for the sake of the "ministry " or "family", the abuse seems irrelevant to the protection of the church. Wicked pastors are protected because change even when it is righteous frightens people. They would rather protect the abusive pastor than protect the victims.

I believe this because I have known many men who were "in the pulpit" were not approachable or would tolerate correction. It is my opinion that these are people who want an easy job and who believe they are so special that they should be allowed to be kings over their subjects. The one man pastor system is not Biblical, and we see why, it puts too much emphasis on the power of one man while fostering godlike treatment of them. It makes the believers look to the pastor rather than to God. I have seen this in extended family, they are gossiping, treating me badly but will never talk to me about what I have supposedly done to deserve it. My only guess is that I address things when they are not Biblical, but in a calm and friendly way, it is taken as "rebellion" by the pastor as well as those who elevate them.
