Those who have thrown their children in a river to teach them to swim, placed them in temporary panic for a few minutes, but after they learned they enjoyed life a little more because they could do something they couldn't do before.
Making a child do what they don't like is not mean, it is often a blessing to them.
James 1:2-18 "2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
If anyone lacks wisdom it is their own fault. Those who desire wisdom will not only ask for it but enjoy it with glee and implement what they have learned in their life.
The wisdom causes good consequences, life long and eternal consequences.
Proverbs 4:4-6 "…4 Then he taught me and said to me, "Let your heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments and live;
5 Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Proverbs 4:6-8 "…6 "Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; Love her, and she will watch over you.
7 "The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding. 8 "Prize her, and she will exalt you; She will honor you if you embrace her.…"
In this order:
Humble yourself and confess sin and the need for forgiveness. Ask God to cleanse you of your sin. Ask the Lord to give you needed wisdom. Obey God when He speaks to you, even if it is uncomfortable to do so. And, He will never tell you something different from what is already in the Scriptures.
The blessing that comes later from hearing God and obeying Him is greater than any temporary discomfort you might feel.
