"Unconditional love" means that we always have love for the person, sometimes enough to warn them they are going the wrong way. Love is not about happy smiles and affirming gestures, its about doing what is best for someone. Weeping with those who weep and laughing with those who laugh.
Romans 12:15
"15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep."
In other words the born again believer is filled with empathy for those they love ready to help and not harm.
There are many people who treat someone disrespectfully because they have judged something that is not their business to judge. They tend to be petty and picky about small matters that have nothing to do with godliness.
When we love someone we are not picky, we do not treat anyone with disrespect, however we might lovingly warn them when there is a diversion from God. Those who are judgmental about things that are not sin often approach others in a fighting stance, ready to tear apart those they think are beneath them.
When we meet someone who loves to tear down rather than lovingly inform we have met someone who does not understand the love of God. These people are the first ones to become easily offended when they are told they are wrong about something.
A case could be made that someone whose first reaction is anger are probably thinking we are attacking because that's what they would be doing if they were addressing a problem.
1 Corinthians 13:4-13
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails.
1 Corinthians 13:11-13 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."
