This modern form of leading someone through prayer has led people to believe saying things makes it true. They misunderstand that Christ must make a change in us and it will be based on our heart's desire to be changed by Him.
Treating people like children as though they cannot know the words to say is silly. When we give the salvation message a person who is led by the Holy Spirit to say what the Holy Spirit wants them to express will make all the difference.
God will not save a person who says words to please another human being.
The thief of the cross is a good example of this. All that thief did to be saved was defend Christ, He believed Christ and was in paradise that very same day with Christ.
To lead someone in prayer is manipulation and lack of faith that God can use His own word to bring about salvation. Mankind is always trying to help God out when they ought to just trust that He told us what to do and leave it at that.
Romans 10:9-10
"Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes and is justified, and with the mouth, one confesses and is saved."
If they ask more questions you can give them more scripture.
Leading someone in prayer often is a matter of pride, those who do it seem to take credit for it. No one who leads someone in prayer can take credit for anyone's salvation.
Ephesians 2:8-10
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
I was led in prayer at 12 years old at church camp. I didn't live for the Lord after that. When I became born again it was alone in my house in my twenties when I came to the end of myself. After that God began to open my eyes as I prayed that He would show me only truth. I was willing to throw away everything I was taught and everything that others believe to believe only Christ.
Because of that prayer, I have left behind the traditions of men and the modern teachings, all rituals and much more to follow Christ. Most people do not do this, they love their traditions and being accepted by others with false beliefs. Walking in fear of rejection of man many people hang onto things that dishonor God.
If you want to be born again be willing to have your life transformed by Christ, not by the ideas of human beings, but only by Christ.
Romans 12:2
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
2 Corinthians 5:17
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
If you attempt to transform yourself you will fail. Let Christ do the transforming, then it will be your character and not smearing of whitewash over the outside, it will be a completely new being from the depth of one's soul.
Matthew 23:27-28
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness."
Don't be a whitewashed tomb with traditions of men, become completely transformed by Christ. Hallelujah!
Ephesians 2:10-11
10 For we are HIS workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
HIS WORKMANSHIP!!!! HIS WORKMANSHIP!!!!
