Marriage is not a contract with the government, it's a covenant between a spouse and God. This applies not only to Christians but also to unbelievers. It began in the garden of Eden when God made Adam and Eve.
When two people make a promise to one another it is also in front of God who then makes them into one.
When God makes two people one it is not merely words but a spiritual bond that cannot be severed until death. And, no human government can sever it.
A certificate given by the state of a country does not make two people one nor does another paper dissolve the union. Divorce and remarriage is clearly not an option with God when two people have promised and been made into one by Him.
Divorcing by the laws of the land does not dissolve the marriage, it does nothing except in legal humanistic terms protect the money and property, the spiritual union remains.
Remarrying after divorce is the same as having serial relationships outside of marriage. God never endorses or blesses a second relationship while the first spouse still lives.
All remarriage after divorce are shacking-up. Obtaining pieces of paper by the law of the land does not dissolve a marriage and does not make a new marriage. We know this because of what Christ said.
Luke 16:18
“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery."
There are many Christians looking for loopholes to be able to disobey God.
They use the excuse that someone committed adultery on them, as though that severs the spiritual bond, but it does not. They use the passage in Matthew that speaks of the engagement period in which the Jewish custom was to allow divorce for unfaithfulness during the engagement period they called "betrothal."
This never applied to marriage.
We see that Christ never gave this provision for divorce because Matthew was written to the Jews who had this custom of divorcing for fornication, (meaning before marriage) but the Gentiles He spoke to in Luke did not have such a custom of divorcing from an engagement, the reason there was no mention of the exception clause so many people wish to defend.
Many years ago every believer discouraged divorce and sought to find ways to reconcile a troubled marriage. They knew God's principles of marriage as permanent in life until death.
Let me be clear, one husband at a time does not make marriages. Serial marriages while the first spouse is still alive remains adultery.
One husband for life makes a marriage.
Breaking a promise to remain faithful to the first spouse and marrying another does not validate the second promise which has no meaning because promises broken to move into the next relationship makes the next promise a sham. One cannot promise to the second man after breaking a promise to the first one. The promise becomes a lie.
Don't become angry with me I am only telling you what God said. If you are angry at what God said, that is dangerous for you.
What is the instruction from God on this matter of divorce?
Here it is: 1 Corinthians 7:10-11
"10 But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife is not to leave her husband 11 (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband is not to divorce his wife."
This could not be more clear!!! If someone is divorced by the law of the land then they should remain alone as they seek to pray for reconciliation. If the spouse refuses then the one who wishes reconciliation will be protected by God as they obey Him.
Living in remarriage after divorce is the same as having two spouses in the house, the second spouse is adultery on the first.
God commanded one spouse for life until death! All the excuses people have given are not Biblical and have ruined the church and the culture as a whole.
Since lack of faith and willfulness dominates our culture we have more people angry at those who wish to promote God's principles than they are concerned about the well-being of those who divorce and remarry. God's will and purpose in marriage is of no concern at all to those who love their pleasure.
Just because a second marriage appears to be working for those who disobey God, does not mean the marriage is blessed by God. Many people have a lot of fun and enjoyment of life in their rebellion but they do not have the blessing of God on their hearts. Those who disobey God regress in their walk and perhaps their rebellion is an indication that they were never born again and face hell at the end of their life.
And, worst of all is the example for the next generation which is one of willful rebellion against the standards of God leaving a wake of broken and angry people who do not trust God or love the permanence of marriage. These people do not love period, they only love their own fleshly desires and are angry at God and anyone else who speaks of His principles.
May the authentically born-again believer become stronger as they are pummelled daily by those who refuse to hear God's Word. The reward is great for those who defend God.
Matthew 10:22-30 "22 and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.
25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.
Have No Fear
26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.
27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered."
Speak the truth and never engage with those who have already decided and have refused the truth.
