Why do some Christians think they can bind the devil? The proof text they often use is Matthew 18:18: "Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
In context, however, "binding and loosing" refers to the authority Christ gave His church to make judgments regarding sin, repentance, forgiveness, and church discipline. The context begins in Matthew 18:15: "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother."
This passage is not a promise that Christians can bind demons in order to cast them out of believers (no true believer needs a demon cast out), bind territorial spirits, or command Satan to cease his activity in a particular region or sphere. Nothing in the context has anything to do with spiritual warfare against demons.
If this is what you believe, or what you have been taught, then you have misunderstood the context of Jesus' words. Whoever taught you this is twisting the Word of God, has deceived you, and should cause you to question whatever else they teach.
